Raid Ponte di Ferro Pechino 2006

For years I have cradled and pursued this trip to put the wheels on Chinese land and it is still so incredulous that I find myself dealing with the reality. On July 22 we depart, the trip is one of those that one does once in a lifetime, both for the 14000 kilometers and for the eight countries to be crossed. So many cultures, so many experiences Departing from home and destined for Peking capturing the images will be the hardest job with an eye on the road and the other to snatch as many details as possible without skipping the emotional aspect. The experience that I have accumulated over the years is cancelled emotionally as if it were the first trip ever. Through Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, we will enter Kazakistan, with her cultivated lands at times to lines distressed with ancient caravan roads. The sight of the first camels and the sandy trails will deliver us to the Asian continent. From now on before we will be absorbed in a different world, that world told by Mark Polo but whose existence was first described by a Franciscan monk, Giovanni of the Pian of the Carpine, that 50 years before the Venetian, undertook a one and a half year long trip, from Magione next to Perugia, to go to the court of the Gran Kan Guyuk. The latitude point N44E54' and longitude E56E will be the borderline between Kazakistan and Uzbekistan. From the frontier we will reach through a dusty trail of 300 kilometers and arrive in Kiva, a folk city with many colored bazaars. To follow Bukkara and millennia-old Samarcanda on the Silk Road, the only one that unites Europe with Asia. For the second time I will see the Registan, the majestic mosaic complelx constructed by Tamerlane. After reaching Taskent, the capital city, we will continue for Osh in Kirghizistan. We will be in the Fergana valley and the Alajskij mountains will confirm that the Chinese border is next. We will spend the night in the yurtes, the typical houses, of the nomadic people of this region. Irkestam is the border town with China, situated at 3536 meters; it is the door of access to the region of the Xinijang. We will arrive and rest at Kashgar. Kashgar is still today a millennia-old commercial crossroad and a caravaan road. Despite the frontiers, the most important point of central Asia with her unmatched Sunday market and oriental fulcrum on the Silk Road. Riding at the edge of the immense basin of the Taklamakan Desert, we pass through Urumqi and the Turfan Oasis, then Hami and Dunhuang with the caves of the 100 Buddhas. We are at the beginning of the Chinese Wall and we continue for Lanzhou, Labrang, Liuyuan, Xian with his/her army of cooked earth. To follow Luoyang and finally Peking destination last of our extraordinary crossing, with which we would have crossed fourth than the circumference of our Earth. The motorbike used on the trip is a splendid KTM 950 ADVENTURE.
